EVALUATION OF PHARMACOGNOSTIC PROFILE, PHYTOCHEMICAL PROPERTIES AND ANTHELMINTIC ACTIVITY OF BARLERIA CRISTATA LEAVES
Abstract
The present study evaluated the pharmacognostic characteristics, phytochemical constituents, and in vitro anthelmintic activity of the ethanolic leaf extract of Barleria cristata. The plant material was collected and authenticated, followed by Soxhlet extraction using ethanol. Pharmacognostic evaluation confirmed the identity and quality of the crude drug. Preliminary phytochemical screening revealed the presence of bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, tannins, phenols, terpenoids, and steroids. The anthelmintic activity was assessed against adult earthworms, Pheretima posthuma, at different concentrations, using Albendazole as the standard reference. The extract demonstrated dose-dependent paralysis and death of worms, although its efficacy was lower than the standard drug. Statistical analysis using one-way ANOVA indicated significant activity (p < 0.05). The findings support the traditional use of Barleria cristata in helminth infections and suggest its potential as a natural source for developing plant-based anthelmintic agents.
